Eat Right For Your Spine

Eat Right For Your Spine

Bone health is a topic that doesn’t get enough attention. Most young people have more concern about their skin or their teeth because they’re more obvious than bones, but no matter your age, it is something to pay attention to. Your skeletal system and particularly your spine will have to support you for your entire life.

Your spine is made up of cells, just like your muscles, skin, and organs. And like all cells, they are built from the foods you eat and the nutrients contained in those foods.

The most important nutrient that is necessary for your body to build strong bones is calcium. But even if you supplement your diet with calcium, you may not be able to utilize it unless you also consume other components that help it work.

Here are the vital nutrients for spine health and the foods that contain them:

1) Calcium: dairy products including milk, cream, cheese, yogurt. Dark green vegetables like lettuce, broccoli, kale, collard greens, and spinach. Soft-boned fish, like salmon, and sardines and anchovies.

2) Magnesium: raw fruits such as figs, bananas, raspberries, and avocados. Vegetables like cabbage, peas, brussels sprouts, artichokes and asparagus. Legumes like black beans, garbanzo beans (chick peas) and kidney beans. Nuts and seeds. Dark chocolate or raw cacao. Whole grains.

3) Vitamin D: Vitamin D-enriched milk and dairy products. Salmon, canned tuna, herring or sardines. Cod liver oil. Egg yolks. Mushrooms.

Treatment for Back Pain

Approximately 16 million Americans experience chronic back pain, and there are many remedies and treatments, although some are only designed to help on a short term basis. Nutrition plays a key role in long-term treatment for this condition. And while you work these key nutrients into your diet to improve the health of your spine, there is a more direct approach to treating back pain, neck pain, and other spinal problems.

Chiropractic care is the most natural approach to treating back pain, by far, as it’s the least invasive. Chiropractic care addresses the alignment of the vertebrae in the spine and the relationship of the skeletal system with the nervous system. Back pain most often stems from a misalignment of the vertebrae, which puts pressure on the nerves and interrupts their function and triggers the pain response via the brain.

Chiropractors are vigorously trained to gently and accurately move the vertebrae back into place, and take the pressure off the nerves. When that pressure is relieved, the nerves can then communicate to the brain that the channels have been opened, and it will reduce pain response.

At Glendale Chiropractic, we treat many types of back pain, neck pain, sports injuries, and also chronic health conditions like fibromyalgia. Whether your pain is new or old, mild or severe, we can offer you a comprehensive treatment plan to alleviate that pain with no invasive drugs or surgery involved. Our goal is to make your healthcare transparent and easy for you and get you back to living your life the way you want to live it.
